Deathwing verses Death Guard

It sucks to suck.

I played in a small 40k RTT this past weekend and I didn’t fair well, going 1-2. The tournament organizer allowed a player to bring his Crusher Stampede list despite it just being removed from competitive events (this player just finished buying and building it so no real hard feelings) and allowed the new Balance Data sheet changes with the Armor of Contempt.

In my first game, I played against a new ‘Nid list and scored a solid victory with my Deathwing. Their psychic powers are @#%^&* filthy and one of my biggest weaknesses so I was pleased that I scored a W for the match. It was close and if the player had played keep-away from me, I don’t think I could have won.

My second match pitted me against a Thousand Sons player who brought termie spam with Magnus. Outside of cultists, I killed only 4-5 terminators and was shredded by mortal wounds. I failed twice to get my Litany of Faith off, which might have saved me a few wounds, but the T-sons ran away with the points. I almost aced Magnus in the first turn too I couldn’t manage to plink him off the table.

I played Death Guard in my third game and again faced mortal wound spam. Between the new Armor of Contempt and the damage reduction/FNP/regen, I didn’t score many points or do a lot of damage. I charged a single unit of Blightlord Terminators with three Deathwing hammer-nator squads and bounced. Ug!

I predict that the next few weeks of meta will be dominated by terminators with mortal wound spam. And nids. I barely killed any terminators with my Deathwing and my shooting phase was worthless if I was shooting at a 2+ or 3+ armor save. My close combat phase was slightly better, but still not great and -3 AP thunder hammers in the assault doctrine barely moved the meter on killing my opponent’s plastic dudesmen.

What do I do? I might go back to my Grey Knights that I haven’t played since 6th edition. I can beef up my terminator numbers and with the amount of mortal wounds they can dish out, it might be enough umph to keep me in the competition.

40k is in a sorry place, IMHO but it’s really the only game in town. My friend Gabe and I bought some Song of Ice and Fire miniatures and gave it a go. It’s a nice and clean game, but it’s really more of a board game than a miniatures game. I’ll write more about that in another post.

Warhammer 40k Army Theme Songs

Ever since I was a wee lad first dipping my toes into miniature wargaming, I've always "sung along" while I played. While some players jiggle their dice, some pull their tape measure out and let it drop back in, but I've always had background music in my head and I tunelessly hum songs that match the armies on the table to the current events.  I'm also a big baseball fan and my friends and I would discuss our "walkup music" - the song that gets played over the stadium when you walk up to bat. Wrestlers have it. Comedians have it. James Bond has it. Why not Warhammer 40k? Goblin Hobbies Stamping Kit First Attempt

I recently purchased the Goblin Hobbies Stampin' Kit after seeing the ads and how-to videos online. Brent from Goobertown Hobbies made it look super easy and I thought this could be the answer to painting clean Lamenters shoulder pads and eliminating the need for decals on other models. When the kit arrived, I gleefully started stamping some paper napkins in my kitchen. My early stamps weren't that great, but it was on paper and I was recklessly splogging nail polish everywhere so I wasn't worried about neatness or finesse or my success. After watching a few more tutorials and some nail art tutorials, I made some earnest attempts to make some new battleshock counters for my Blood Angels.
