Las Vegas Open Recap

The last two months have been kind of crazy. I spent a lot of time building, play testing, rebuilding, and painting various armies in preparation for the 40k Championship of the Las Vegas Open. First, I started off with several iterations of my Salamanders Space Marines. I put together the roaming Aggressor mob backed by an Ancient with banner, Captain, Lieutenant. I also had three devastator squads with heavy bolters and missile launchers for those tasty mortal wounds. I also tried a similar version of the list with Gillymon and Ultramarines but I could never quite get the list to take out the Astra Militarium hoard with Imperial Knights. I tinkered and tinkered. I tried Ad Mech, my Khorne rush, and Dark Eldar but I never really felt good about any of the lists so I decided to build an Eldar list similar to one I've seen online. I gave myself about a month to buy, assemble, paint and play test my army. (Note to self: not a good idea.) Alaitoc Farseer 3 units of 5 Dark Re...

Warhammer 40k Big FAQ 2018 2 is out!

Just like the title says, the Warhammer 40k Big FAQ 2018 2 is out! You can download the FAQ from the Warhammer Community page  HERE! *The first big change is the change to Psychic focus. Except for smite, each psychic power can only be cast once! There goes my Ork "Da Jump" force ... Honestly, in the games I've played, smite is the biggest problem, not the other powers. *Next the big change is to the tactical reserves. "Units that arrive as reinforcements must now wait until the second battle round to do so – they are reserves that arrive to reinforce your army mid-battle, not reinforce it before your opponent has had a chance to move any of their own models." *Also, the amount of reserves is now limited by points, not the number of units. *The advance deployment stratagems took a hit. Armies like Stygies VIII, Raven Guard, Alpha Legion get a pre-game 9" move instead of being able to deploy 9" away from an enemy. Personally, I think it shoul...

Vegas, baby, Vegas!

Guess who has tickets to the 2019 LVO? This guy! When I went two years ago I got super sick (it was so bad that I was reported to the CDC for my illness) but still had one of the best times playing mini games ever. I even got to meet Lawrence from Tabletop Tactics, Aceface, and the Warhammer TV gang. It was epic. Now, I need to decide what army to bring. 1. Old hammer Flesh Tearers. 2. Ad Mech Mars army. 3. Imperial Soup with Raven Guard, AM, Ad Mech. 4. Dark Elder 5. Salamander I think my Flesh Tearers would get a lot of notice as a fun, old army, but I don't think they are that competitive. The Imperial Soup list is pretty competitive (in the current meta) but might not do well against a top tier Knights list. I feel like a teenager trying to decide what to wear to prom.

Ork Vehicles

This driver gets it. Road rage - Built Ork Tough. I've never wanted a beater car to paint up more than I do now. I'd have to invest in new brushes though.

Midwest Conquest and Bug Eater Grand Tournaments

The past two weekends were spent on the road at a couple of Warhammer 40k Grand Tournaments; the Midwest Conquest GT in Kansas City and the Bug Eater GT in Omaha. Salamanders - Blood Angels For the tourneys, I planned on bringing my Imperium combo of Salamanders and Blood Angels. The Salamanders are the backbone with four razorbacks, a Leviathan dreadnought in a drop pod and tac squads with lascannons. The Blood Angels have two smash captains and a chaplain with jump packs to thump the enemy. Blood Angel Command Somehow I drew the ringer army in the first round. One of the tournament organizers played a Custodes army and played me kind of soft - and I still lost. I technically won the game because it was the ringer but I actually lost in "real" points and that started a spiral of losing that I have never experienced before.  I know I didn't have an optimized list for tournament play but I didn't do well at all. Bad dice, bad army construction,...

Warhammer 40k in the Marvel Universe - including Deadpool

I've mentioned before that I'm a big comic book collector in addition to a miniature war gamer and recently there have been a few borrowed designs from the Warhammer/Warhammer 40k universe showing up in Marvel comics. First, I saw a Tau Riptide in an issue of Venom (nay Space Venom.) The recently, we found out that Deadpool is a mini war gamer himself: I didn't picture Pooly as a Skaven kind of guy, I would have thought he'd play some flavor of Chaos. Or maybe Harlequins.
