Warhammer 40,000 Update - April 2019 is salty!

The Warhammer 40k update for April 2019 dropped the other day and the commentary is salty!

You can find it here: Link to GW Communnity FAQ

I largely like all of the rules changes and clarifications that GW has made, and I still believe that 8th edition is best version of the game.

Some folks have quibbled over the Deathwatch special ammo not getting the Beta Bolter rule (or new bolter rule for Astartes.) Personally, I'm OK with Deathwatch not getting the increased number of shots because they already wound on 2+. Getting close and spraying massive amounts of firepower and getting to wound virtually every roll is, frankly, silly. It's too good. Go play Candy Crush if you want to win all of the time.

The only rule that really affects me is the Cherub + Hellfire shell strategem clarification. You can't use Hellfire shells or Flack Missiles, then Cherub that weapon to shoot a Hellfire/Flack again for free. The rule specifically says you can use the strategem again, however, that is disallowed in matched play.

My favorite part of the update is how salty the designer's commentary is when bringing up obvious rule abuse, misinterpretation, or willfully playing dumb by players.

"We are a bit surprised by these questions. To be clear, our intent ..."
"As all good wargamers know, the edge of the battlefield is essentially the edge of the universe ..."
"...  some players have been exploiting this oversight ..."
"We feel this is a shame, and so are introducing an errata ..."

GW has long been the target of fanboy rage, especially by those who seem to abuse the rules the most and I enjoyed their candid take on the rules changes.

  1. I thought some of the word was very interesting. Almost like GW fanboy raging back. It's not entirely unwelcome.

Salamanders Badab War Veteran

Primaris Marines are great sculpts, but they will never have the soul of the old hand-sculpted models.  The Badab War is my favorite battle in the 40k universe and its one of the reasons that the Salamanders are my favorite Space Marine chapter.  #miniaturepainting #paintingwarhammer #grimdark #warhammercommunity #salamanders #salamanders40k #28mm #spacemarines40k #oldhammer #badabwar #astartes #armageddon40k

Callidus Assassin

This is my newly painted Callidus assassin, Mary Poppin-yourbackfield. She scores points. I hate that I have to play one of these to stay competitive. Yar.

Bad News for Deathwing

The new Balance Data Slate was released today for Warhammer 40k 9th edition and my beloved Dark Angels Deathwing list took a beating.  If you don't have the codex, the fourth bullet point was the rule that gave Inner Circle infantry units, like Deathwing Terminators, Transhuman Physiology. Basically, the key feature that most players loved about the list.  Rest in peace, Deathwing, we hardly knew ye. Also, what a crappy way to write that rule?! Why not simply include a sentence that says, Inner Circle models do not benefit from transhuman without use of a strategem? I know 10th edition is supposed to be cleaner and easier to understand, but this does not bode well. I'm not really a loyal Dark Angels player (see what I did there?) so I'll just shift back to playing one of my other Marines armies or orks. I've been day dreaming about a Thunder Warriors army again and dug out some bits to work on conversions. I'm loving the idea of a Age of Stryfe White Scars/Star Hunt...
