The Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan Tournament Companion version 1.0 was released last week. This handy document provides guidance for organizers on how to best play Warhammer 40k events and tournaments, including rules for terrain layouts, mission selection, and pairings. This useful document is truly a sign that ol’ James Workshop is listening to players and I’m absolutely pleased in its release.
I loved, loved, loved the Warhammer Events team’s organized play rules for 9th. The terrain rules, the handy mission cards, the use of the Best Coast Pairings, etc. allowed for smooth flowing events and I felt the terrain was perhaps the most balanced 40k has ever been. Seriously, the terrain rules were fantastic, and I’ve stopped playing in tournaments that use player placed terrain. My local club almost always uses the GW terrain setup for our friendly games.
One of the elements I enjoyed the most in the 9th edition tournament pack was the precisely placed terrain and measured footprints of the buildings. For tournament play, it was sublime and it didn’t offend the beer and pretzels player in me at all. The new Leviathan Tournament Companion has changed the game slightly and gives us four new recommendations for terrain layouts. Generally, I like them. There is more terrain on smaller footprints and in my first games of 10th edition with these layouts, they seem to work well.
If I had to nitpick, I’d like some more definition of the footprints. To that end, I’ve done some measurements in Photoshop (and in real life) and I’ve come up with a few standardized ruin sizes - based on the graphics from the Leviathan Tournament Companion.
Small ruins = 5”x6”
Medium ruins = 10”x5”
Large ruins = 11”x6”
These are in no way definitive, but I think these measurements will guide our terrain building and play in the near future. GW says that there are, “no fixed measurements” and that precision will limit the variety of terrain and handcuff tournament organizers. I can’t argue with their reasoning and I kind of agree with their position, but I do like having strict layouts.
I’m also working on some new terrain to help our gaming club fill in the smaller sections. I really think the Tamiya brick walls set will make an excellent addition to our battles, especially in the smaller ruin sections. I’m painting some now and I’ll post photos soon!
